Sentinel News banners flew in Andrews road to welcome guests to the fifth Sentinel News/ Thrive EnviroQuiz/Art interschool’s competition that took place at Kronendal Primary on the 6th June 2014. This year Thrive partnered with the Two Oceans’s Aquarium to create community awareness around the 5 Thrive Pillars of Sustainability with a focus on the ocean .
There was much excitement as the junior teams from Kronendal, Llandudno, Sentinel, Ambleside, and International School of Hout Bay and senior teams from Hout Bay High, Ambleside, International School of Hout Bay, Silikamva High and Camps Bay High sat down waiting for the EnviroQuiz to start . Frenzied last minute reviews of the weekly Sentinel News EnviroQuiz articles and the Coastal Facts sheets took place.
The senior competition ended in a close finish with one point difference between the winners, Ambleside and Hout Bay High who won R2000 and R1250 respectively. The three other schools, Silimamva High, International School of Hout Bay and Camps Bay High shared the third prize of R750.The winners of the Junior Quiz and R2000 was Ambleside Primary with runners up Kronendal and Llandudno winning R1250 and R750 respectively.
In the EnviroArt competition, judged by Lissa Claassens, Chuma Maweni and Katrine Claassens learners were inspired to produce insightful and moving artworks with a strong message about saving our seas. The use of recycled waste, much collected on Hout Bay beach and transformed into ingenious messages related to the theme of protecting our seas and coastline.
The prize winning EnviroArt works and EnviroQuiz questions and answers will be on display in the Hout Bay Village Library, Melkhout Crescent for the month of June. The EnviroQuiz question and answers can also be found on the Thrive website www.thrive.org.za
